Batman

Batman, by far, is the best superhero on the face of the planet. His suit, gadgets, weapons, and his reasoning for doing what he does set him apart from all the other superheroes.

I recently rewatched the Batman trilogy with Christian Bale as Batman and Christopher Nolan as the director, and once again, I proved to myself that these three movies are on a level of their own. They are by far my three favorite movies. I can watch them anytime, any day, anywhere.

This time, while watching them, one scene stood out to me, and it was in the movie Dark Knight Rises Again. The one with Tom Hardy as Bane. Did you know Tom Hardy gained over 30 pounds for this role? And it was his idea for that iconic Bane voice? He copied the voice from Bartley Gorman, a Gypsy King. Alright, that’s enough of me fan-girling over Batman. Back to the blog.

When Selina Kyle (Catwoman) took Batman to see Bane in the sewers, it wasn't a pretty sight. Bane absolutely annihilated Batman. To relate this in basketball terms, it's like when LeBron James was on Cleveland for his second stint, playing the Raptors in the playoffs. It wasn't even fair.

After their one-sided fight, Bane throws Batman into the prison well. This prison is inside of a well where people spend years trying to escape, but sadly, only one person has ever escaped; the rest died down there.

Batman was meant to die down there as well, but after regaining his strength, he went to climb out of the well. As he walks toward the rope to tie himself up, the people in the well start chanting a mantra, which means "rise." Batman tried it a few times, but he couldn't make the jump. You're meant to climb the wall, get to a ledge, and jump from one ledge to another. Then, when you're on the second ledge, you climb up and out. Batman made a few attempts jumping from one ledge to the other, but he simply couldn't make it and kept falling back to the bottom. Until one civilian told him to do it without the rope holding him. As Batman walked to try the jump again, the tribe chanted "rise," and the man offered him the rope, but he declined. This time, he made it across.

The moment I saw this scene, I related it to life. Sometimes, when we wear this figurative rope, we don't go all in, we don't give 100%, because we know we have something to fall back on.

The reason why I think Batman made the jump without the rope is that he knew he had nothing to fall back on. He knew the rope wasn't going to save him this time, so he was either going to succeed or die, and that gave him the extra confidence and courage to persevere. Sometimes, we have to have that same mindset in life. We can't have a backup plan; we can't have a safety blanket. We have to push ourselves and have success as our only option, because when our backs are against the wall, there’s nowhere to go but forward.
